About Us

The SRHC was formed in 1983 following extensive rationalisation of country rail lines, the Group was formed to ensure that Seymour remained a recognised Railway Town and provided the community with an opportunity to enjoy the experience of rail travel in restored and preserved carriages.

Over time the SRHC has acquired an extensive fleet of locomotives and carriages. Its workforce has developed an envious reputation for restoration work and maintenance. Our workforce is often utilised to carry out repairs and maintenance on both private and Government locomotives.

The Depot

Situated about 100 kilometres from Melbourne, the Depot and Workshop occupy an extensive area with both broad gauge and standard gauge track accessing the Depot.

Rollingstock is stabled under cover in large Sheds at the Depot with all necessary repair work and maintenance handled on site.

Our Fleet

Our fleet consists of both wooden cars with many constructed in 1906, and air conditioned steel cars most of which are from the original 1937 era Spirt of Progress train.

As well as a J class steam locomotive, vintage diesel locomotives form the basis of our operating fleet.

Locomotive Hire

The SRHC offers a wide range of locomotives for lease to private operators to assist in meeting their market.

Membership of the SRHC is available which will allow you to contribute as a volunteer on the worksite to assist maintaining the Depot and fleet and will provide first hand information on upcoming rail tours.
